Wood Sourcing for a Sawmill in Challenging Conditions
- Metsä Group -
Optimise the supply to a sawmill in Russia with the following conditions:
forests are dispersed in 84,000 ha
road infrastructure is underdeveloped
lack of detailed forest inventory data
10-year seasonal schedule for road construction, harvest and transportation.
Considers forest and soil characteristics, harvesting regimes, timber transportation, and different road types (for winter and summer)
Minimizes the budget to reach annual harvest levels
Detailed plan with accurate estimations of construction costs, harvesting cashflows and volumes.
METHODOLOGY IN BRIEF
With satellite images and ground reference data, we estimated the standing inventory and soil characteristics.
Optimization while considering multiple variables including harvest schedules, and existing and future road networks.
MORE INFORMATION ON THE METHODOLOGY
To create the plan we first mapped the standing stock and soil characteristics using RapidEye-5m ground resolution satellite images and field sample plots measured with TRESTIMA. These were then used as input into a wood flow optimisation program which considered all costs related to wood sourcing as well as the legislative framework under which the lease areas are managed.
